With more and more people taking up horse riding, and seeing that there is more to it than simply climbing on board a horse, a wide range of different groups and organisations have joined the existing professionally offered exams.  It can be confusing knowing how the different levels fit in together. The most common groups are:-

  • The Pony Club
  • The British Horse Society
  • The Association of British Riding Schools
  • IPRASM (International Progressive Riding and Stable Management)
  • Brownies / Scouts

All of these groups offer their own version of riding and horse care testing, and all of them are done practically.  The information that is in the following pages will prepare riders for all the theory in these tests and the rider will be able to earn a certificate of achievement but will need to take the relevant test for the formal qualification.

The levels fit in as below.

The lower levels are deliberately written in a child friendly since it is often younger riders starting out who are taking these levels.  However, the information is relevant no matter what the age of the student, and more mature riders are encouraged to begin at level one.  As the test level becomes more difficult, the technicality of the information and writing increases.
